  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

  • 1/2 cup red wine (optional)

  • 1 teaspoon dried basil

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)

For Serving:

  • Cooked pasta or mashed potatoes

Instructions:

Prepare the Meatballs:

  1. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, milk, beaten eggs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, chopped parsley, dried oregano, dried thyme, salt, black pepper, and chopped prosciutto or pancetta (if using).

  2. Mix the ingredients gently until well combined, but avoid overmixing to keep the meatballs tender.

  3. Shape the mixture into golf ball-sized meatballs and place them on a baking sheet.

  4. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  5. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until they are cooked through and browned on the outside.

Prepare the Sauce:

  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onions and cook until softened.

  2. Add minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and red wine (if using). Stir in dried basil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper.

  4. Simmer the sauce for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.

Finish and Serve:

  1. Gently place the baked meatballs into the sauce, coating them evenly. Simmer for an additional 10-15 minutes.

  2. Serve the gourmet meatballs over cooked pasta or mashed potatoes.

  3. Garnish with fresh chopped basil just before serving.
